Its been two weeks since Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba have finished airing. My heart is still empty, wanting more of the show. It’s a rare occurrence when a show hits me so hard that it leaves me empty from inside after its end. Today is Saturday and deep inside my heart still longs for another episode, it still longs to experience more of the show. To fill the void, my mind decided to share some of thoughts about the show, its characters, its story. Today I’ll be sharing my thoughts regarding “Tanjiro Kamado” our protagonist of the show. I am “Regular Mirza” and welcome to the CrackView. Today we’ll pin Character Analysis of Tanjiro Kamado.
Tanjiro Kamado – Not You Average Shounen Protaganist
In anime, when it comes to shounen genre, We have inherent assumption of protagonist to be someone naive, “extra” positive kinda dude. I don’t mean this in a bad way. I mean shounens are supposed to have protagonists like these. We don’t want a sociopath serial killer on a protagonist seat do we? When the show started, The first impression I developed was to Tanjiro to be in the same boat as most of the shounen protagonists. Except for the hairs though!! During the course of first episode, writer made it clear that its not the case
So what event happened in the first episode? Soon after his family was killed, Tanjiro was comfronted by Giyu Tomioka, a Hashira Ranked Demon Slayer. When Giyu was about to slash Nezuko, Tanjiro seemingly made a rage charge toward Giyu. That is what you expect normally to happen. But it wasn’t the case here. In what appeared to be a mindless charge from Tanjiro, was in fact a planned move to take down Giyu. We don’t normally get to see use of intellect in sheer emotionally traumatic sequences, at least not in shounens. Tanjiro keeping his calm served as a good first indicator of him standing out from stereotypes.
Eye Sympathy for an Eye
Another thing I found fascinating about Tanjiro was his attitude toward the whole revenge thing. Revenge arcs / plots are is a common occurrence in the world of shounes anime. For instance in Hunter x Hunter Chimera Ant Arc, Gon Freeces (Spoiler- Select text to view) *killing neferpitou to avenge of death of Kite*. In case of Tanjiro Kamado, He did joined Demon Slayer Corps, not to avenge death of his family but to make sure no one get to experience what he did. He do not depise Demons but rather have sympathy towards them as a former human. We get to see several instances of Tanjiro sympathsizing with Demons, holding their hand comforting them as they are having their last breaths. A great example was in episode 16 when Tanjiro used fifth form to give demon a painless death. The scene became one of favorite moment throughout the show. It gave me a unique feel, a feel that was sad yet so comforting.
Mature Approach Toward Similar Formula
Shounen protagonists are often designed as a overly kind-hearted or childishly kind-hearted individual. Another thing that Kimetsu no Yaiba did well is giving Tanjiro a mature approach toward the same kindness formula. His kindness do not keep him from slaying demon though he do wish better for them. He posses a sheer kind attitude towards fellow humans regardless of their attitude towards him. A great such showcase was towards the end of episode 7. Kazumi was yelling at Tanjiro about how he do not understand the pain he was feeling, the pain he felt after he lost her fiance. Here I was expecting a emotional outburst by Tanjiro about his tagic past but this never happened. All he did was a smile, a smile that so warm, so beautiful yet so tragic. He did not whined to Kazumi about how he had lost his family, All he did was sympathize with him while holding his feelings inside.
This serve as an important reminder for ourselves. One must not complain about how his life sucks more when someone is emotionally traumatized. “Oh you went through that? hah I went through something much harder” This attitude will give nothing but more pain to the victim. Nothing is changing by you whining about your past, it happened now all you can do is move on and live above it. Instead of wasting energy on whining, why don’t aid someone else in the similar situation?
